US AIR FORCE, Colo. - Michael Stirland led the way for the Thunderbirds men's golf team today as he vaulted into the top 15 at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational after the second round of play. As a team, SUU improved by six strokes from day one to stand 16th overall with a 594 (300-294). Colorado remained in the lead with a 558 (280-278).

Head Coach Richard Church said:

"Michael put together a tremendous round today and really gave us a boost. His 69, highlighted by the eagle on the first hole, was a great example of what he's capable of when he gets things rolling. I was also encouraged by the improvement we saw throughout the lineup, with several guys lowering their scores from the opening round. We're continuing to make progress, and now the focus is on finishing strong and putting together our best round of the tournament."

The Thunderbirds

Michael Stirland rocketed up the individual leaderboard into the top 15, tying for 12th with a three-under 141 (72-69) after firing an incredible 69 during the second round. That tied for the ninth-best round of the day.

Stirland had a tremendous day, including a phenomenal eagle with a two-shot effort on the 402-yard first hole. Stirland went on to collect four other birdies.

Meanwhile, Charlie Gillespie moved into a tie for 39th with a two-over 146 (72-74). He completed the day with a trio of birdies.

Braylon Bingham remained in the 70s, tying for 78th with a nine-over 153 (78-75). He improved by three shots from his opening round, including a pair of birdies on the day.

Jing-Cheng (Jarell) Wang finished the second day in sole possession of 84th place with a 10-over 154 (78-76). He dropped two shots from his opening-round score with a pair of birdies of his own.

David (Charles) Serdenia rounded out the top five for the Thunderbirds in 89th place with a 163 (83-80). He also improved by three shots, including a birdie on the fourth hole.

Luke Barnes remained steady with another three-over effort to stand at six-over 150 (75-75) in the individual draw.  After posting an eagle on hole 12 yesterday, Barnes checked in with a birdie on hold 14 today.
