T-Birds Fall In Two Tennis Matches

San Jose State completed a season-sweep of Southern Utah in women's tennis and Idaho won the first-ever matchup between the Thunderbirds and Vandals, as SJSU took a 5-2 win from the T-Birds and UI came out on top 7-0 Saturday at Las Vegas Sunrise Park.
It was the second straight win by the Spartans over the Thunderbirds this season. The match with Idaho was the first-ever between the T-Birds and Vandals.

Against the Spartans, both Emmi Nelson-Bulloch and Carmen Blanco picked up wins for the Thunderbirds. Nelson-Bulloch grabbed a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win over Sanda Hadzisabic at No. 4, while Blanco was victorious over Dana Popescu  at No. 5 by a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 count. SJSU's Ashley Tavita took a 6-2, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (6) win over Kirrily Burden at No. 1 singles, while Amber Silverstone claimed a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win over Kateryna Drynova at No. 2. At No. 3 it was Silvana Dukic with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Martha Kruk and Jennifer Williams  took a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kristi Latteier at No. 6.

The Spartans won the doubles point by winning two of three matches. Burden and Drynova teamed to take an 8-3 win at No. 1 over Tavita and Popescu but Silverston and Rokie Larijane defeated Kruk and Nelson-Bulloch, 8-6, at No. 2 and Dukic and Williams beat Blanco and Latteier, 8-6, at No. 3.

Against Idaho the Thunderbirds battled in doubles but still lost that point, then went on to lose all six singles matches.

Burden and Drynova lost 8-5 at No. 1 doubles while Blanco and Latteir lost by the same count. At second doubles Kruk and Nelson-Bulloch lost by an 8-4 margin.

At first-singles it was Idaho's Silvia Irimescu taking a 6-1, 6-1 decision from Burden, while Barbara Maciocha claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win over Drynova at No. 2. Yvette Ly took a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kruk at No. 3 and Alexandra Ulesanu won 6-1, 7-5 against Nelson-Bulloch at No. 4. Blanco took Jana Siwa to a super tie-breaker before losing 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3) at No. 5 and Natalie Kirch claimed a 6-0, 6-2 win over Latteier at No. 6.
