Two SUU Golfers Earn National Tourney Bids

CEDAR CITY, Utah, Aug. 13 ? Two golfers who will be competing for Southern Utah University next year have qualified for national tournaments, which will be contested over the next week. Matt McArthur has qualified for the U.S. Amateur, while Mikayla Williamson will compete in the Junior PGA Championship.

McArthur (St. George/Pine View HS), who will be a senior at SUU next season, qualifed for the U.S. Amateur by virtue of his second-place finish at the Utah Qualifying tournament last month at Alpine Country Club.

Williamson (Laketown/Rich HS), who will enter SUU as a freshman this fall, claimed her spot in the Junior PGA after finishing second in the Utah Qualifier at Soldier Hollow and advancing as an alternate.

McArthur begins medal play Monday at Pinehurst Golf Club in Pinehurst North Carolina. The tournament calls for two days of medal play, with the low 64 players advancing to single-elimination match play, which begins Wednesday. The championship round will be Aug. 24.

Williamson began competition today at TPC River's Bend in Maineville, Ohio. Seventy-eight players are competing for two spots on the women's Junior Ryder Cup team, with a cut to the low 30 competitors after the first 54 holes of stroke play.

“This is great competition for both Matt and Mikayla,” SUU Golf Coach Richard Church said. “We're proud to have two players representing our school and our state in such prestigious tournaments. They've both had good summers playing golf and we hope they can keep that going for another week and on into our fall seasons.”
