SONOMA, Calif. - Southern Utah University women's tennis wrapped up its three-match California road trip with a 5-4 victory over Sonoma State on Monday afternoon. The victory moves the Thunderbirds to 4-3 on the year with the 2013 home opener just around the corner.

SUU jumped on the Seawolves early with a pair of victories in doubles as Veronika Rogova and Madeline Skaras captured an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles and Anastasiia Vasileva and Afton Staheli paired for an 8-5 victory at No. 3 doubles.

Vasileva came back for a second win with a 6-2, 6-0 decision at No. 5 singles over SSU's Lauren Shafer. Senior Olya Kunz and junior Alex Ivanova capped the 5-4 triumph for Southern Utah with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Kunz picked up a 6-3, 6-3 result in her first appearance at No. 2 singles with Ivanova only dropping three games in her match with the 6-3, 6-0 decision.

Skaras and Staheli dropped their singles matches at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively, in straight sets. Rogova, playing at No. 1 singles for the first time in 2013, also suffered defeat, but stretched her match to three sets after bouncing back from a 6-3 setback in the first for a 6-2 win in the second. The freshman then played a third-set, ten-point tiebreak against Sara Celma, falling 10-5.

Southern Utah will host its 2013 home and Big Sky opener on Thursday morning when the Thunderbirds face Sacramento State at 10:00 a.m. on the Thunderbird Tennis Courts.
