CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University women's tennis dropped its Big Sky Conference opener to Sacramento State on Thursday morning, dropping to 4-4 on the year and 0-1 in conference play. The Hornets moved to 3-0 in Big Sky play and 3-7 overall.
CSUS opened the match by sweeping the doubles point with an 8-5, 8-2 and 8-4 result at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively. The Hornets also picked up straight-set victories at No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles.
Southern Utah's point on the day came at No. 3 singles where Alex Ivanova fought back from 4-0 down in the first set to come within a game of taking the stanza, 6-5. However, Sac State's Sophie Lohscheidt came back to tie the set at 6-6 and force a tiebreak. Ivanova came out victorious with a 7-5 win and was up 1-0 in the second set when Lohscheidt withdrew from the match because of an injury.
Afton Staheli, playing at No. 5 singles for the first time this season, jumped out to an early advantage, taking the first set 6-4. However, the Hornets' Saskia Angerer came back in the second set, capturing a 6-0 win to force a third-set, ten-point tiebreaker. Staheli, once again, had the advantage in the frame, leading 8-4, but ended up losing the set 11-9 as Angerer came back for the win.
