Provo, Utah - The Thunderbird men's tennis team started their season on Friday night against the Brigham Young University Cougars, and fell to their in-state opponent 7–0.
The Cougars opened by taking the doubles point with Keaton Cullimore and Share Monroe defeating Brandon Olcott and Dario Rios 6–1 in the No. 2 match and John Pearce and Jeremy Bourgeois defeating Joshua Coen and Peyton Garnett 6–2 in the No. 3 match.
The No. 1 doubles match went unfinished with BYU's Andrey Goryachkov and Jacob Sullivan leading Jacob Nelson and Ryan Andrus 5–3.
In singles play, Cullimore swept Rios 6–0, 6–0 in the No. 1 match and Monroe knocked off Andrus 6–0, 6–2 in the No. 2 match.
SUU's Nelson suffered a sweep by Goryachkov 6–0, 6–0 in the No. 3 match and Olcott suffered the same fate against Pearce in the No. 4 match.
BYU's Bourgeois defeated SUU's Coen 6–0, 6–2 in the No. 5 match and Cougar J.D. Malan swept Peyton Garnett 6–0, 6–0.
The next event on the Thunderbirds' schedule is a matchup with Eastern Washington in Cheney on January 23rd.
