CEDAR CITY, Utah -- The Southern Utah University Thunderbird men's tennis team will be opening conference play against Portland State University on Friday, February 28 at 11:30 a.m. The T-Birds will also be facing University of Portland at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 29.
Last Time Out
The Thunderbirds most recently claimed their first home victory over Colorado Mesa University 7-0.
RJ Parker competed in the No. 1 singles position where he finished victorious over C. Albrechtsen 6-3, 6-4. Keonho Shin faced Tyler Landen where he claimed another Thunderbird victory 6-2, 6-7, 1-0. To finish singles play, Jake Williams defeated Jandre Van Wyk 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles play, Conor Tordoff and Juan Erro aided in the Thunderbird sweep when they defeated Landen and Steven Howe 6-1.
The T-Birds also travelled to Salt Lake City where they faced the University of Utah. The men fell to the Utes 0-7.
Nolan McCaig fought against Utah athlete Randy Cory in singles competition but fell 4-6, 6-2, 3-6. Jose Ortega also competed in singles play where he fell to Wally Thayne 1-6, 1-6.
Opponent Preview: Portland State University
The Thunderbirds will open Big Sky Conference play against Portland State University. The Vikings finished the 2019 campaign 14-8 overall and 6-4 in the conference. Portland currently sits 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
The teams last met in March of 2019 where the T-Birds topped the Vikings 4-3.
Erro aided in the hard fought win in singles play where he claimed the victory over Viking's Sam Roberts 6-4, 6-3. In doubles play, Tordoff and alumni athlete Jonathan Morales defeated Avery West and Lucas Castelo Bronco 6-1.
Opponent Preview: University of Portland
The University of Portland sits 3-1 overall in the 2020 campaign. In 2019, the team finished 7-14 overall and 2-7 in the West Coast Conference.
This will be the first time the two teams have ever faced each other.
