CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Thunderbird women's tennis team picked up their second Big Sky Conference victory of the season on Friday morning, as they knocked off the University of North Dakota 4-3.

The teams started with singles competition, where the Thunderbirds were able to seal the victory by taking four of the six matches.

SUU senior Veronika Rogova had a big comeback in the No. 1 singles match, topping UND's Lacey Sprinkel after falling in the first set.

In the No. 2 singles match Evgenia Marushko defeated Mimi Yunker 6-1, 7-6 after a strong finish to the second set.

Laura Martin Lozano won the No. 5 singles match for SUU, and in the No. 6 singles competition SUU's Charity Sagiao topped Aliza Deming 6-1, 6-1.

North Dakota was able to seal the doubles point after winning the No. 1 and 2 matches.

SUU's Sagiao said even though the team is close to the end of the season, it's never too late to start building up momentum.

“I think today our girls really fought hard,” she said. “Even when we were down, we had a lot of comebacks in the sets and we had a great fighting spirit today. I'm so proud of them.”

SUU is set to take on Dixie State on Saturday in Cedar City at 2 p.m. If the weather makes for unplayable conditions, the match will be forced to move.
