Men’s Tennis Wraps Up Play In Colorado

GREELEY, Colo. - The Southern Utah men's tennis wrapped up play in Greeley, Colorado over the weekend with matches against Colorado State Pueblo and Northern Colorado.

Match One: CSU Pueblo 4, Southern Utah 3

Sunday morning the Thunderbirds played their third of four matches in four days, this time competing against the Thunderwolves of CSU Pueblo. The T-Birds dropped the doubles point with their only match win coming from the team of Conor Tordoff and Cedric Rupa as they defeated Dante Alcala and Rafael Abreu 6-2.

The doubles point proved to be the deciding factor as the the teams would split the singles competition. Tordoff, Rupa, and Guy Feigin all picked up wins in their respective singles matches with Tordoff's coming in the No. 1 position over CSU Pueblo's James Ryan (6-4, 6-4). With three points in the singles competition, the Thunderwolves were able to escape with a narrow 4-3 win over the Thunderbirds.

Match Two: Northern Colorado 4, Southern Utah 2

The Thunderbirds played in their second Big Sky match of the season Monday morning against the Bears. Despite picking up their first doubles point of the season, the Thunderbirds fell to UNC by a score of 4-2.

The Thunderbirds took a 1-0 lead over the Bears by winning the doubles competition for the first time this season. Guy Feigin and Ben Yeacker defeated Cassell King and Kyle Pease 7-6 and Tordoff/Rupa defeated Connor Finerty and Agustin Lombardi 6-3 to secure the point.

Down 1-0, the Bears came out and dominated the singles competition, winning every match except for one. The only Thunderbird to win their singles match was freshman Conor Tordoff. He defeated Connor Finerty (7-5, 6-4) in the No. 1 position to give the team their second point.

“I'm proud of how we keep competing and fighting against teams that used to sweep us last year. It was a good experience for the team to finally know what it feels like to go into the singles after winning a doubles point," head coach Sadhaf Pucher said. “We put ourselves in a position to win every match this weekend. Building a program is a process and I am very happy with the progress we have made this weekend.”

The next match for the Thunderbirds will take place this Saturday in St. George against Colorado Mesa.
