PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Thunderbird women's tennis team came away with a win in Portland against the Portland State Vikings, winning 6-1.

Starting the T-Birds off in the singles competition, Charity Sagiao defeated her opponent in the No. 4 spot 6-2, 6-1. Following suit was Eira Tobrand who won in a close contest in the No. 3 spot, 6-3, 7-6, (7-4), putting Southern Utah ahead 2-0 for the match.

Zoe Tanti fell in a very close, but lengthy contest in the No. 2 spot to Portland State, 6-7, (3-7), 6-1, 6-4. Daniela Cozzi followed a similar pattern, taking the No. 5 spot 6-7, (5-7), 6-4, 7-5 to win the match.

Mikala Lowrance won her match 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 6 spot which put the Thunderbirds ahead 4-1. Ghita Nassik won a long winded match in the No. 1 spot 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (12-10), 1-0 (10-6).

In the doubles competition, Thunderbirds Eira Tobrand and Zoe Tanti set the tone with a 6-4 win in the No. 2 spot against the Vikings. In the No. 3 spot, Laura Martin Lozano and Daniela Cozzi sealed the doubles point for the T-Birds with a victory in close contest 7-5. The No. 1 spot went unfinished.

Words from Coach Ketmayura

After the match, head coach Ketmayura remarked, "The girls fought hard for the doubles point despite not playing well. The singles matches were very close. I'm proud of how we have learned from our previous conference matches and continued the momentum from spring break."

The next match will be on Tuesday, March 27 at 10 a.m. in Cedar City against the Northern Arizona University.
