FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- The Southern Utah Thunderbirds track and field teams found success at their first meet of the year in Flagstaff, Arizona as they competed on Friday in the NAU Friday Night Challenge. The sprinters and jumpers have concluded their competitions while the heptathlon athletes await their final stretch at the Stacy Dragila Invitational in Idaho. These athletes will conclude their event on Saturday morning.
NAU Friday Night Challenge
At the NAU Friday Night Challenge, the Thunderbirds proved to be strong contenders for the 2019 campaign. To start the evening, Tre James ran the 60-meter where he swept the competition. James placed first overall with a time of 6.72. Justin Lewis followed James closely with a finishing time of 6.82. This time placed Lewis third in the competition.
In the 60-meter hurdles, Devon Montgomery claimed third place with a time of 8.17. Frank Harris III also secured a top three finish in the high jump. Harris placed second in the competition with a jump of 6' 8 ¾".
On the women's side of the team, Linnea Saltz claimed second place when she competed in the 800-meter. Saltz finished with a time of 2:19.23.
The women's 4x400-meter relay team finished fifth in the competition with a time of 4:03.41. The relay team was comprised of Saltz, Mia Russell, Laura Kher and Natalie Kalda.
Stacy Dragila Invitational
At the Stacy Dragila Invitational, Jentry Skidmore finished third in the pentathlon with a total score of 3,260. David Steeves will be finishing the heptathlon events to conclude the meet Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
