Thunderbird Track and Field Wraps Up First Outdoor Meet With Strong Performances

LAS VEGAS -- The Southern Utah University Thunderbird track and field teams wrapped up competition at UNLV with strong performances from several athletes to begin the 2019 outdoor campaign.

The women began competition by competing in the 400-meter relay. Elize Larsen, Rakayla Tyler, Mia Russell and Sinclair Watson finished the race fourth overall with a time of 47.03.

Watson also competed in the 200-meter where she finished fourth overall with a time of 24.39.

Angie Nickerson returned to the track for the outdoor season as she competed in the 1,500-meter. Nickerson finished second overall with a time of 4:31.06. She was followed by Allison Pray with a time of 4:42.60.

In the field, Lauren Emter competed in the women's shot put where she finished third with a mark of 45' 6 ½". This mark also places Emter sixth all-time in SUU records.

Emily Wilson began competition with the track team by competing in the triple jump. The junior athlete finished with a mark of 37' 2 ½". This mark ranks Wilson second in school history.

On the men's side of the team, George Espino claimed the championship in the 1,500-meter with a time of 3:55.30. He was followed by Liam Kennell with a time of 4:01.83.

Devon Montgomery returned for the outdoor season as he competed in the 110-meter hurdles. Montgomery finished second overall with a time of 14.33.

Also on the track, Justin Lewis competed in the 200-meter where he finished fifth with a time of 21.18. This time currently ranks Lewis second all-time in SUU history.

Skyler Porcaro finished the competition with a first place in the javelin. Porcaro finished with a mark of 217' 0".

The Thunderbirds will continue the outdoor campaign on March 27 as they compete at the Texas Relays. The team will also compete at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival and the Stanford Invitational on March 29.
