CEDAR CITY, Utah -- The Southern Utah Thunderbird women's tennis team is set to open their 2020 spring campaign with competition against the University of Utah.  The Thunderbirds will compete on Saturday, January 11.

Last Season

The Thunderbird women finished the 2019 campaign 13-11 overall and 5-5 in the conference.

At the Big Sky Conference Championships, the Thunderbirds faced Eastern Washington where they took the victory 4-3. The team later faced NAU in the semifinals where they fell 0-4.

Following Conference Championships, Jessica Stefan was named to the All-Conference First Team for her performance throughout the season. Stefan closed the 2019 season 18-4 overall in singles play and 9-1 in the Big Sky Conference.

The sophomore athlete also went 11-1 in the No. 5 spot for the T-Birds, and held the winning record in the No. 5 spot at 6-2.

Opponent Preview

The Thunderbirds will face the University of Utah to open their 2020 spring season. Utah competes in the PAC-12 and finished with 13 wins last season and 3-7 in their conference.

The Thunderbirds last competed against Utah in 2019 when they fell to the Utes 0-7.

"This non-conference schedule is very challenging, so I want each player to relax and play their games to start the season," commented head coach Michael Mucci.

"There is no pressure these first few weeks of the season, and I want everyone to play loose, have fun, and play to win. We are going to improve so much in the next few weeks."
