CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah University Women's Volleyball Team and Head Coach Kacey Nady have officially announced the 2022 schedule.
"We are incredibly excited for this upcoming season, as well as the opportunity to play a multitude of new opponents with our transition to a new conference," said Nady. "We have worked hard to build a strong culture within the SUU Volleyball program that promotes academic excellence, strong work ethics, and superior performance on the court. We have a great group of student-athletes for this upcoming season that I think have the potential to accomplish exceptional things."
The Thunderbirds will be entering their first season as a member of the Western Athletic Conference, and many new opponents will be on the schedule, as well as familiar programs in Utah Tech and Utah Valley.
This season, Southern Utah will have 14 matches against WAC opponents and 10 non-conference matches. The slate also includes 11 home matches for the Thunderbirds.
Schedule Breakdown
Preseason
SUU Volleyball will kick off the 2022 season by traveling north to Ogden, where the team will compete in a tournament hosted by Weber State. The T-Birds will play their first match of the season on Friday, August 26 against San Jose State, which is scheduled for 10 AM MT. Later that day, SUU will take on the host school and in-state foe, Weber State, at 7 PM. Southern Utah will then close out tournament play against UC-Riverside the following day.
A week later, SUU will return to Cedar City to play their first two home games, beginning with a match against Cal State Fullerton scheduled for Saturday, September 3, at 2 PM MT. Two days later, the Thunderbirds will be back on the court at the America First Event Center to host Northern Arizona on Monday, September 5.
Later in the week, SUU will travel to Boise, Idaho, where they will compete in their second preseason tournament. The T-Birds will play two games on Friday, September 9, the first of which is scheduled to begin at 12:30 PM MT against Eastern Washington. Southern Utah will then close out the day by taking on host Boise State in the afternoon. The Thunderbirds will conclude tournament play the following day with one final match against Butler.
Before entering conference play, the T-Birds will return to Cedar City for two home non-conference matchups. The first will take place on Friday, September 16 as the Thunderbirds are set to host UNLV. The next day, Southern Utah will conclude their non-conference schedule, taking on Idaho State at 2 PM MT.
Conference Schedule
SUU Volleyball will begin their conference slate with a home match against rival Dixie State on Saturday, September 24 at 12 PM MT. After the crosstown showdown, the Thunderbirds will make their first Texas trip of the season, traveling to take on Incarnate Word on Thursday, September 29 and UTRGV on Saturday, October 1.
The T-Birds will then return home for two more matches the following weekend. They will host ACU on Thursday, October 6, and Tarleton State on Saturday, October, 8.
Another Texas trip awaits SUU the subsequent weekend, as they will travel south to face Lamar and Sam Houston. The contest against Lamar is scheduled for Thursday, October 13, and the match with Sam Houston State will be played on Saturday, October 15.
SUU returns home the following weekend as they reach the final stretch of their regular season schedule. They will host Seattle on Thursday, October 20, along with in-state foe, Utah Valley, on Saturday, October 22.
A lone trip to New Mexico State is up next on the schedule; SUU will take on the Aggies Thursday, October 27 before returning to Cedar City for their final two home contests.
The T-Birds will host Grand Canyon on Thursday, November 3, before taking on Cal Baptist in their final home contest of the season on Saturday, November 5.
SUU Volleyball will then close out their regular season schedule the following weekend by taking their third trip of the year to Texas to face Stephen F. Austin on Thursday, November 10, along with UT-Arlington on Saturday, November 12.
The Western Athletic Conference Tournament will be held at UTRGV from November 17-19.
In Nady's second season at the helm of the program, SUU has the opportunity to continue to make vast improvements from last year and compete in a challenging Western Athletic Conference.
