Kacey Nady Finalizes 2022 Recruiting Class

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah University volleyball program and Head Coach Kacey Nady have announced the 2022 recruiting class ahead of the Fall season. The Thunderbirds will add two junior college graduates in addition to two high school recruits.

"All four of these players bring something different to the table, and each of them has a tremendous skill set," said Nady. "Not only are all of these student-athletes a great fit for us on the court, but they are also an incredible fit for our program and the SUU community off the court."

Macy Short

Short will join the Southern Utah volleyball program after playing two seasons for Snow College. In her freshman season, Short appeared in all 29 matches for Snow, helping to lead them to an overall record of 26-3, and an appearance in the NJCAA National Championship. Short led the team and the conference in assists (994), finished second on the team in digs (276) and service aces (39), and ranked sixth in total points (173). She was named to the 2020 All-Region 18 First Team and received recognition as the Conference and National Player of the Week.

Short followed up her freshman campaign with an incredible sophomore year. Throughout her second season with Snow College, she appeared in all 33 matches, leading her conference and ranking top-five in the nation in both service aces (69) and assists (1029), while being named Conference Player of the Week on two separate occasions. Short was also named to the 2021 All-Region 18 First Team, the NMMI Invitational All-Tournament Team, and was named the 2021 Conference Tournament MVP. Originally from Middleton, Idaho, Short attended Middleton High School and competed for club Idaho Crush throughout her youth career. Short received First Team All-Conference recognition in her senior season, in addition to earning a spot on the Academic All-State Team.

Short on why she chose SUU:

"Coach Kacey is someone that I believe can teach me so much and push me to another level. She expects nothing but the best on a consistent basis, and that is exactly what I was looking for in a coach. The team environment seemed incredibly positive. When I visited, the team made me feel so welcome, and it felt like home to me. I truly felt like SUU was the place where I could grow the most, both on and off the court."

Makenzie Templeton

Templeton will join the Southern Utah volleyball program after competing for Central Wyoming College over the past two years. During her freshman season, Templeton appeared in all 29 matches, helping CWC to a record of 19-10. Templeton finished first on the team in kills (416), hitting percentage (.237), total points (488.0), and service aces (38), while ranking second in digs (283). At the conclusion of the 2020-21 season, Templeton was recognized as a member of the All-Region 9 First Team and All-Conference Tournament Team.

This past season, she helped lead CWC to an overall record of 27-8 and an appearance in the 2021 NJCAA Volleyball Championship for the first time in program history. Templeton once again finished first on the team in kills (508), hitting percentage (.237), and total points (567.5), while ranking second in digs (352). At the conclusion of the 2021 season, Templeton earned First Team All-American honors, in addition to being named the Region 9 MVP and earning First Team All-Region honors. Templeton is a Utah native, originally from Cedar Hills, where she attended Lone Peak High School.

Templeton on why she chose SUU:

"I really loved the coaching staff and the team here. Cedar City is such a beautiful place, and I like that it's pretty close to home for me, so it was an easy decision to choose SUU."

Brooke Pattschull

Pattschull will make her way to Southern Utah by way of Aliso Viejo, California, where she attended Aliso Niguel High School. Pattschull is a 6'3" middle blocker who helped lead Aliso Niguel to back-to-back league championships in her junior and senior seasons, including a CIF State championship last year. Pattschull was recognized as a First Team All-League honoree and was named to the All-CIF Southern Section Team for her exceptional play. Pattschull competed for Momentous VBC and A4 Volleyball throughout her club career.

Pattschull on why she chose SUU:

"I had a couple of main reasons for choosing SUU. I loved the coaching staff and all the girls on the team, and I felt like I would be a great fit for the program. I also chose SUU because of the incredible location, as it is fairly close to home and in a great area in Utah."

Ryan Coughlin

Coughlin will make her way to Southern Utah from San Clemente, California. Primarily an outside hitter, Coughlin competed for San Clemente High School, helping to lead her team to a league championship in her senior season. Coughlin competed for A4 Volleyball for four years on the club circuit.

Coughlin on why she chose SUU:

"I chose Southern Utah because the team really seemed like a family to me, and I really liked how close everybody was. I also chose to come here because the academics and the campus itself are amazing, and academics were really important to me during the recruiting process."

Nady has worked hard this offseason to add talent to her roster and establish a strong culture within the program ahead of the team's first inaugural season as a member of the Western Athletic Conference. The Thunderbirds will kick off the 2022 season against San Jose State on August 26, in a tournament hosted by Weber State.
