SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI -- The SUU Men's Golf team had its best tournament of the year at the Twin Oaks Intercollegiate hosted by Missouri State in Springfield, Missouri. The team finished in seventh place at 22-over par.

Head Coach Richard Church said

"The team really played well this week. There are still areas to improve, but we put together three good rounds of golf and we are in a good spot moving into the final tournaments of the year."

The Thunderbirds

SUU had a phenomenal second round, shooting a 286, two-over par as a team, spearheaded by a four-under-par 67 from Sophomore Charlie Gillespie.

Gillespie led the way for the Thunderbirds for the tournament as well. Finishing in a tie for 15th at +5. Gillespie finished the tournament with eight birdies and an eagle. Leo Torres was just one shot behind Charlie, finishing at +6 in a tie for 22nd. Torres improved by one shot each round, firing a 74 in round one, then a 73, and then a 72 in the final round. Torres led SUU with nine total birdies through the three rounds.

Rashon Williams used a stellar second round of even par to finish T28 at +7 for the tournament. Williams also tallied eight birdies for the tournament.

Senior Donovan Barnes finished tied for 40th at +9, with bookend rounds of 72. An eagle on the back nine of the final round helped push the Thunderbirds to its seventh-place finish.

Sophomore Luke Barnes continued his consistent play, earning him a spot in the lineup, shooting rounds of 77, 75, and 75. 

Up Next

The Thunderbirds will be at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Maricopa, Arizona, from March 31 to April 1. The tournament is being held at the AK-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club.
