CEDAR CITY, Utah — The Southern Utah indoor track and field season is set to begin Friday, Jan. 16, at the Lumberjack Team Challenge on the campus of Northern Arizona University. The Thunderbirds will look to gain valuable experience while remaining competitive at a high level.

Head Coach Eric Houle said

"It's always great to kick off the season," Houle said. "It's a pretty young team, but they have outstanding talent. This weekend's opener at Northern Arizona should be a promising start."

Meet Info

Southern Utah will travel to the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Ariz., for competition against Northern Arizona, Cal State Bakersfield, and Grand Canyon.

The meet begins at 2 p.m. with the men's pole vault, long jump, and weight throw. The final event of the day, the 4x400-meter relay, is scheduled for 7:40 p.m.

Season Outlook

The Thunderbirds welcome a number of new faces ready to compete in Southern Utah's final season in the Western Athletic Conference. SUU also returns key contributors who will look to continue competing at a high level.

Among the returners, Jaedyn Carpenter stands out as a veteran on the men's team. Carpenter represented Southern Utah in the 400-meter dash at the NCAA Division I First Round. On the women's side, Taylor Jorgensen returns after competing in the mile and 3,000 meters at the WAC Indoor Championships.

Both Thunderbird squads will look to contend for a conference championship as the season begins Friday.
