PHOENIX, Ariz. - In the final tournament of their fall season, the Thunderbird women's tennis team had a strong showing at the Grand Canyon Invitational this weekend. They will now have a couple months to prepare for the spring season.
The Thunderbirds did an impressive job of establishing themselves as contenders at this tournament. The draws were split up into four singles draws of eight players each and a doubles draw with all players.
Despite not coming away with any first-place wins, Southern Utah claimed the consolation championship of every single draw, including the doubles draw.
Ghita Nassik beat Whitney Williams of Abilene Christian University 7-5 6-3 to win the consolation championship in her draw.
Eira Tobrand beat another opponent from Abilene Christian University 6-3 4-6 6-4 in a tight three-set match to win another consolation championship.
Charity Sagiao and
Laura Martin Lozano also went on to claim consolation championships in their respective draws.
Martin had success in doubles as well as she and
Teresa De Enrique Schmidt teamed up to win the doubles back draw.
"We finished the last day well and was able to get some good wins while focusing on working on the improvements. Now we're going to work hard during this off season," said head coach
Rose Ketmayura.
