Burns was named Academic All-District 7-NAIA and was an honorable mention Academic All-American NAIA.  A four-year letterwinner (1978-79), Burns was the Thunderbirds' starting quarterback for two years.  He had a career total yardage of 3,647 and ranked in the top 10 in career attempts, completions, yards, touchdown passes, total plays and total yards upon induction.
